Magical False Spring

Sometimes, mid-winter, the temperature climbs, the snow melts, the creek runs strong and singing, and the sun shines. It's what we call a 'false spring,' because although it sure feels like spring for a few days, it won't be long until chill and snow return.

We have been enjoying these days of sun, no one as much as the dogs, who immediately jumped into the creek and ran like mad over the pressed carpet of brown leaves. Birds are chirping like it's spring, too, and the air is warm and friendly with their song.

Everything is brown and green, the colors of March. I try not to let it trick me into believing that winter is over. Though today I saw unfurling leaves on a naked stalk of elderberry, and the round dark green leaves of wild violets that grow so close to the ground almost convinced me.

But there will be snow again soon enough; birds and plants and creeks will go back to sleep under ice and grey skies. False spring gives us the gift of hope and reminds us what it feels like to be warm...reminds us that green and growth are on their way, if not quite yet.

  1. Dearest Dawn, how cute are those little doggies!! Racing around, enjoying the thaw...Alice is doing the same as our weather is similar. Mud, mud, mud - but it's lovely & sunny today and those birds are chorussing magnificently. This is a joyful post and I hope that the rest of your week is filled with hope and happiness :o) With lots of love, Rachel & Alice xoxo

  2. Wow some beautiful shots you've captured from you few false springlike days! Much as I hate realizing that it's only a fleeting few days of what is to come months later, I love those brief periods of time when it feels like spring in the middle of winter - it helps make the more commonly bleak days a bit more bearable!

  3. We have a day like that here on the east coast of England today. Although the temperatures have dropped, it is sunny and bright with not a cloud in the sky. I have wandered the garden and been amazed by the signs of Spring just like you say. But the forecast is set to continue with the drop in temperatures ever more so I know we are a long way off Spring just yet. Beautiful pictures as ever, thank you for sharing.

  10. Here's an invitation to come to my Irish friend's blog on Friday, Jan. 21. Many posts relating to The Wind in the Willows will sit right there. Upon reading the cozy thoughts of Toad, Mole, and Ratty lovers, maybe we can make it until spring. http://rraiselachrymose.blogspot.com/

  13. I remember when I was at college back East, there was one winter when everything melted well before Xmas and the cherry trees bloomed! Kind of broke my heart to see their false hope... but this looks so gorgeous. I am sure you are enjoying every minute of the thaw. xoxo Tina

  15. Hello dear Dawn,

Honestly, your photography and writing have grown like a spring meadow. Fantastic prose, great photos, and all very evocative.

I'm far behind on checking up on you, but dipping in today for a catch-up. Now give those sweet dogs a warm bed in a spot of sunshine.

    Love, love,
